In our usual world, Friday night means date night at home—just us, the kitchen, and whatever culinary adventure we choose. But last week was different. Our good friends Annie and Adam! (and fellow South Africans in Germany) invited us over for a night that took “date night” to a whole new level. It wasn’t just a dinner; it was what we’d call in Afrikaans a real “Kuier” —a heartwarming visit with friends (its pronounced “kay-er” in english, not pronounced queer.. that means something else😜). From cozy fairy lights to an unforgettable raclette meal, it was a night filled with laughter, warmth, and flavors that left us all grateful for friendships, food, and home away from home.
Why a Date Night with Friends Was the Perfect Twist
When we first moved to Germany, our friends, also South Africans, quickly became a huge part of our lives. They’ve been there for us through the ups and downs, and honestly, without them, this whole relocation would have been a lot tougher. So, a cozy evening with them was a refreshing twist to our usual date night routine and a way to truly celebrate their friendship and hospitality.
The Perfect Raclette Dinner Setup: Grill, Chill, and Fairy Lights

We arrived at their house, greeted by the cozy glow of fairy lights hanging around the dining table and soft music setting a relaxed mood. Imagine a living room transformed into the perfect setting for a raclette night—warm, inviting, and intimate. This wasn’t just a dinner; it was an experience.
Our friends had set up a raclette grill in the center of the table. For those who haven’t tried it, raclette is like a social grill where everyone gets to cook their own food—an interactive dining experience that guarantees a lot of fun and a bit of culinary creativity. As we sat around the table, we each placed our chosen meats—chicken, beef, or pork—onto the grill, chatting and laughing while the sizzle filled the room.

The Amazing Flavors of Our Raclette Feast
Annie, our wonderful host, had thought of everything. Alongside the meats, she’d prepped foil-wrapped spuds ready to open up, steam rising, and perfectly soft. And just to make it that much better, she whipped up a creamy cotage cheese topping, which was amazing. For those who like a bit of zing, we added some sriracha sauce—an instant flavor boost.
And just for me, she got my favorite topping—crispy onions, or “Röstzwiebeln” as they call them here in Germany. I sprinkled them generously over my potatoes, and it took the whole dish to another level. There’s something about that crunch that makes everything taste better!

The raclette grill also came with tiny frying pans that slid into compartments at the bottom. Annie had made some garlic butter just for this, and let me tell you, it was a revelation. We’d melt the butter in these little pans, wait for it to heat up just right, and then add our grilled meats. After a few seconds of frying in the hot, melted garlic butter, each piece of meat came out juicy, flavorful, and simply perfect.

And because no great meal is complete without a glass of wine, we paired it all with a good bottle of Gallo, enhancing the rich flavors and making the entire experience feel a bit like a culinary masterpiece.
A Simple, Fun Night for the Kids, Too
While we indulged in our raclette feast, we didn’t forget about the little ones! We made chicken nuggets and fries for them—simple, kid-approved comfort food. They enjoyed their meal while watching a movie, giving us adults the chance to sit back, relax, and fully dive into the “Kuier” with no interruptions.
The Sweet Finale: “Melktertjies” – A Taste of South Africa
To wrap up the evening on a sweet note, Annie surprised us with a South African-inspired dessert drink: Melktertjies! Named after the classic South African melktert (milk tart), this smooth, creamy, and slightly spiced alcoholic drink was the perfect way to end the night. It tasted like home and brought back memories of family gatherings back in South Africa. It was the ultimate “schmoozer” drink, warming us up and leaving us with a lingering taste of nostalgia.
