A Heartwarming Start with the Kids
We began our day by involving the kids in the celebrations. Even before the grown-up date night started, our little ones played an important role in setting the tone. Their energy and surprises made the day extra special.
The Adorable Gift Exchange
Louis, always thoughtful, arranged a delightful surprise for his daughter: a lovely mug decorated with hearts to enjoy hot chocolate and a small box of chocolates—because everyone knows that’s the way to a girl’s heart. The morning held an even sweeter moment from our 4 year old, Noah. With money he earned doing chores, he bought a box of chocolates for me.
Louis had secretly hidden this gift in his drawer, instructing Noah to present it first thing in the morning. So in the morning as i woke him up (Louis was at work at this time already) Still half asleep, Noah approached me and said,
“Mommy, you know, there is something over there that is bothering me.”
Curious, I followed him to the drawer. With utmost innocence, he pulled out the box and declared,
“I bought you chocolate with MY money.”
This heartfelt gesture melted my heart completely.
Setting the Scene: A Valentine’s-Themed Table
Before the kids went to bed, we set up a festive table just for them. We laid out their favorite foods, such as pizza with a cheese-filled crust and mini crunchy chicken snitchles. I draped a vibrant red tablecloth over the table and placed the beautiful roses Louis had gifted me at its center. Each child’s plate featured a small chocolate treat, all accompanied by soft, gentle music in the background. Although these moments were cherished, we waited until the children were asleep before starting our own date night.
Our Raclette Adventure

Once the kids were asleep, the evening truly became ours. Louis unboxed our new raclette device—a generous gift from our wonderful friends in Germany (Annie and Adam) who understand how much we treasure our date nights. This thoughtful present added extra excitement to our culinary adventure, and we felt incredibly grateful.
While Louis handled the raclette setup, I got busy preparing the food that would soon sizzle and melt to perfection. The entire process was a delightful mix of activity and anticipation, infused with love at every step.
Delicious Details of Our Menu
Our raclette spread was a colorful and flavorful feast that delighted everyone:
- Meats & Seafood:
- We sliced two rump steaks into tender strips
- Prepared turkey strips for a lean protein option
- Sautéed prawns in a garlic butter sauce in a pan placed under the raclette device
- Vegetables & Cheeses:
- Fresh red peppers added a sweet and tangy crunch
- Oven cheese was melted in a specially designed pan, perfect for drizzling over the meats
- Pre-cooked potato balls were quickly heated to achieve a perfect, crispy exterior
- Caramelized Onion Rings: We also enjoyed onion rings that we caramelized on top of the raclette. Their sweet, rich flavor provided a wonderful contrast to the savory ingredients.
- The Special Base:
- I prepared a yogurt-based bread that we fried on the raclette and glazed with garlic butter—a creative twist that delivered a delicious, crispy base for all the melted goodness.

For our American friends who might wonder about the raclette device: while traditional raclette grills are common in Europe, in the United States similar devices, often electric tabletop raclette grills, are used to replicate this cozy experience. They melt cheese evenly and offer the same fun, interactive dining experience.
A Perfect Ending with Wine and Conversation
As the aromas filled our kitchen and conversation flowed effortlessly, we paired our meal with a favorite red wine. Soft background music enhanced the ambiance, making our Valentine’s evening not just a meal, but an experience to remember.
Between cooking, sharing stories, and savoring each bite of our raclette creations, the night was a beautiful reminder that love is nurtured through shared moments, unexpected gestures, and delicious food.
Valentine’s Day at home doesn’t have to be elaborate; sometimes it is the simple, genuine moments with family that create the most lasting memories. We already look forward to our next date night adventure!
