Our date night at home

Louis & Mellissa At-home date nights

Here is tiny bit about us

Welcome to Our Date Night at Home, your source for creative, cozy, and affordable at-home date night ideas! We are Louis and Mellissa, a family of expats from South Africa, and we’ve been making Germany our home now since September 2022. As a couple with three wonderful children aged 9, 7, and 4, we understand how challenging it can be to find time for each other amidst the chaos of family life, especially when you’re living far from home. Our journey began when we realized that, without family nearby to help with childcare, traditional date nights just weren’t an option.

We were both born and raised in South Africa, in a small town called Klerksdorp. It’s where we met, where we grew up, and where we made friendships with some of the most amazing people this earth has ever seen. We miss them dearly, and even though we’ve embarked on this new chapter in Europe, those connections still play a huge role in our lives. We are blessed to have found new friends here, who have become our new family—a community of people who support us and have made this journey feel less lonely.

Our Faith and Community Journey

Our church community has also been a significant blessing. Our family of believers from our little town back in South Africa still plays a big part in our faith walk over here. We’ve also found an incredible church congregation in Maastricht, in the Netherlands, which is about a 35-minute drive from where we stay. It’s all in English, and it has been such an amazing find—especially considering how hard it can be to find a church that feels like home when you’re an expat. It’s been a real lifeline for us to stay connected with our faith and find comfort in familiar vibes, despite being so far from Klerksdorp.

If you’re considering moving to Germany or have recently arrived, we highly recommend checking out South Africans in Germany on their website or following them on Facebook. They have a wealth of information on integration, events, and advice on settling in, and it’s a great way to connect with others who share similar experiences.

Adapting to Life Abroad

Moving to Germany has been an incredible experience, but it has also been tough. Integrating into a new culture and learning a new language comes with its challenges. Our children have been picking it up so quickly, and we’re so proud of them, but for us as parents, it’s been a slower process. That’s one of the reasons why our date nights have been so important—we needed a way to keep our connection alive amid all the changes, to keep our relationship strong and not lose ourselves in the whirlwind of moving and adapting to a new country.

With no grandparents, aunts, or uncles around to watch the kids, we had to get creative. What started as a necessity soon became something we looked forward to—romantic, home-cooked meals for two, right in our own kitchen. It turns out, date nights at home are not just practical, they’re incredibly fun!

Whenever we shared our experience with friends, they always seemed inspired to try it themselves. That’s when we thought, “Why not put this online and inspire even more people?” So, Our Date Night at Home was born. Plus, I (Louis) have been researching and learning how to create websites as a side hustle, so this project allowed me to combine two passions in one—romantic nights with Melissa and diving into web development.

What We Love About Our Date Nights

We love recreating some of our favorite meals from back home in South Africa. Whether it’s making our own pizza from scratch, cooking up a delicious espitada, or whipping up a platter of nachos, we always make it a special occasion. Not only does it remind us of home, but it’s also much more affordable than going out to a restaurant.

Our Friday nights have a little tradition of their own. Melissa is diligent about keeping the kids’ bedtime routine strict from Monday to Friday. By 8 PM, our three little ones are fed, bathed, and ready for bed, which gives us the perfect opportunity for date night. On Fridays, we don’t have dinner with the kids—instead, we treat them to their favorite frozen pizza (it’s Pizza Fridays for them!). After they’re tucked in, we open a bottle of wine and start cooking our own meal, savoring the time together while we cook and catch up on life.

Why We Started Our Website

We believe there are many people in the same boat as us—families with busy schedules, limited time, and no access to babysitters. For couples like us, at-home date nights can be a great solution. When we realized how much our story inspired others to take action, we decided to create a space where we could share our ideas and hopefully “spark a fire” in others to create their own date night rituals at home.

Through Our Date Night at Home, we hope to share the joy, creativity, and simplicity of making time for each other in the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re looking for romantic dinner recipes, fun date night ideas, or just a way to reconnect with your partner after a long week, we’re here to help make it happen. Bring the magic back!
